Let’s Talk About Money: Helping Teen Girls Build Financial Confidence

Talking about money early matters.

In July 2023, HeyyGirl Foundation hosted “Let’s Talk About Money,” a financial literacy class created specifically for teen girls ages 12–15.

Held at the Park Forest Library, the free class created an opportunity for girls to begin learning about financial concepts that can have a lasting impact on the decisions they make as they grow into adulthood.

The session focused on four important areas of financial literacy: budgeting, interest, banking, and credit.

For many young people, conversations about money don't happen until they are faced with real financial responsibilities. HeyyGirl Foundation believes girls should have access to that knowledge much earlier.

Programs like Let’s Talk About Money are designed to help change that.

By introducing financial concepts in an environment created with young girls in mind, HeyyGirl can help participants begin developing the vocabulary, awareness, and confidence needed to better understand how money works.

Learning how to create a budget can help a girl understand how to make decisions with the money she has. Understanding banking introduces her to tools she may use throughout adulthood. Learning about interest and credit can help prepare her for financial decisions she will eventually encounter.

These aren't simply lessons about dollars and cents. They're part of preparing girls for greater independence, informed decision-making, and stronger financial futures.

“Let’s Talk About Money” represented the kind of early financial education that remains central to the work of HeyyGirl Foundation.

Because girls shouldn't have to wait until adulthood to start learning how to manage their financial futures.

The earlier we give girls knowledge, the more prepared they can be for what comes next.
